French Open – Who Will Be Queen of Clay?

tennisAs this year’s grand slam tournaments hot European shores, the burning question is, as always, who is going to take the top honours. At Roland Garros, the French Open looks set to offer no major surprises.

With Serena Wiliams maintaining her blistering form, her phenomenal fitness and of course, with her tournament experience to pull on who would really bet against her taking this year’s honours? The ever popular sport bookmaker M88 Mansion has Serena favourite to win at 4 to 1 odds.

Will it be either number 2 seed, Li Na or number 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska? Well, my crystal ball tells me that the number three seed is out as well (actually I’m writing this after the third round) so for the first time in goodness knows how many years the clay court championship will be won by a player outside of the 3 seeds.

Interestingly enough, only five of the WTA top ten players remain at this point. They include Simona Halep (3), Maria Sharapova (8), Jelena Jankovic (7), Petra Kvitova (6) and Angelique Kerber (9). Of the remaining players, Maria Sharapova would probably be worth a punt as she has probably the best record on clay of the remaining contenders. Apart from losing three times of Serena Williams she has only had one other loss on clay in the last two years.

One threat she will need to overcome is that of Samantha Stousur, who was a finalist in 2010 and a doubles winner in 2006. With all the tournament experience necessary, the powerful bug shots by the buckets she does appear to have everything that is needed, apart from the nerves. She is known to crumble under pressure and that may be enough to deny her success against Sharapova should it get to a big finals showdown.

Amongst the next flight of players, the “on the way ups”, so to speak, look out for Suarez Navarro, who is widely recognised as being a clay court specialist and has the most vicious one handed backhand seen in Paris for many years. All said and done though, it’ll probably not be enough to neutralise Sharapova so I’d put 50p each way if I were you.
