A’s, Rangers Top Initial AL West Power Rankings

nflSpring training is upon us, as camps are opening all across Arizona and Florida. The AL West figures to be one of the most competitive divisions in the majors, as all five teams made moves to improve their rosters. With that in mind, here is a look at how the AL West appears to stack up at the outset of the baseball season.

1)      Oakland Athletics – The two-time defending division champs get the benefit of the doubt and start the season as the favorite, ahead of the hard-charging Rangers. Though the A’s lost the surprisingly effective Bartolo Colon to free agency, they did add Scott Kazmir to the rotation, as well as Jim Johnson and Luke Gregorson to what should be a lights-out bullpen.

2)      Texas Rangers – Other than the Yankees, no team was more active this offseason in reshaping its roster than the Rangers, who traded for Tigers slugger Prince Fielder and signed on-base machine Shin-Soo Choo to a seven-year, $130 million deal. With Choo, Fielder and Adrian Beltre now in the lineup, the Rangers offense should score a lot more runs for the fans in Arlington, and the pitching staff still includes Cy Young runner-up Yu Darvish.

3)      Los Angeles Angels – Compared to the previous two offseasons, the Angels had a relatively quiet winter, deciding not to dip into the high-priced free agent pool. They did make a couple trades however, supplementing their pitching staff by acquiring Hector Santiago from the White Sox and Tyler Skaggs from the Diamondbacks. The offense should have no trouble scoring with perennial MVP candidate Mike Trout and presumably healthy seasons from Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton, so the success of the ballclub will come down to the pitching staff.

4)      Seattle  Mariners – The Mariners made the biggest splash of the offseason, signing superstar 2B Robinson Cano to a massive 10-year, $240 million contract. However, outside of that move they have done very little to help the team, particularly the back of the rotation. The M’s have three All-Star caliber players in Cano, Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma, but still do not have the depth of the A’s or Rangers.

5)      Houston Astros – The AL West cellar dweller did make some moves this offseason, signing RHP Scott Feldman to help the rotation while acquiring talented OF Dexter Fowler from the Rockies. Though the Astros should be a little more respectable this season, it still appears they have a long way to go before they are vying for the postseason.
